"Visions of Light" Bios

Atalee Judy has been part of the Chicago dance community for over 15 years where she studied for 3 years, at the now defunct, Mo-Ming Arts Center, before entering into the Dance program at Columbia College Chicago and graduating with a BA in Dance Performance & Choreography (with Honors in Outstanding Achievement) in 1994. Atalee founded Breakbone in 1996 and wanted a company to house her extreme emotional and athletic nature while exploring and exploiting her background in the 1980's punk scene of New York City and her experiences in the martial arts.

Seen teaching her style of Bodyslam Technique throughout Chicago, Atalee has established herself as one of Chicago's premiere performers and visionaries. She has toured spots in Canada, Switzerland, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy & Mexico. Atalee is truly honored and proud to be awarded the 2006 Illinois Artistic Fellowship for Excellence in the Arts, along with other recent awards including The Elizabeth Cheney Foundation Award for Excellence in Performance and the Chicago Dance & Music Alliance Award for her production of the ONE Series 2003/2005.

One of the most important achievements occurred this past June 2006, when confronted with an early diagnosis of breast cancer Atalee was informed she had 14 pre-cancerous fibroid cysts in her breasts. She immediately underwent invasive surgery to remove the cysts and then had to recover and wait to find out if they were malignant or not. Relieved with the results of non-malignancy, she went to perform two months later, taking the company on tour to Canada with the Logotype v2.1 concert, performing three nights as a presented act on the main stage for Toronto's International Dance Festival.

After the Visions of Light concert Atalee will be taking a one year break from dance to focus on her training for the Chicago Marathon and working on a film project with Carl Wiedemann. While this will not be her last performance, it will be a while before she or Breakbone DanceCo perform again.

Berianne Bramman (Guest Vocalist) is pleased to be performing with Breakbone DanceCo. once again! She first began adding her voice to their performances as a vision of death in Deadtech, and co-wrote the harmonies, lyrics and narration with Atalee Judy for the experimental dance opera heroine - A Woman's Tale. Outside of the Breakbone family, her most recent performance pursuits have been backyard production of Buffy: The Musical, a variety of one acts with Heartless Bitch! and Midsummer Nights Fever: A Drag King Revival, and DJing industrial/powernoise with Kinetic (www.kineticnoise.net). This past November, Berianne performed along with nine other talented women as ‘A Sordid Collective’ on a show called The Lola Project which premiered at The Hothouse. An irrefutable sold out success, The Lola Project was a collaborative year long process that lead to an exciting drag ballet narrating the intertwining lives of a mischievous group of characters in the 1920’s (www.asordidcollective.com). Keep an eye out for this piece to remount in the future! Until then, Berianne would like to thank Atalee for inviting her to perform in Visions of Light, and for a continually smooth collaboration process.

Jesse Coffelt (Guest Performer) graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in English Literature. He started dancing in 1998 while at the university. While there he performed with Elina Mooney, Robert Sher-Macherdl and David Dorfman as well as with the Open Door Dance Company, and DanceExpress. In Chicago he has danced for Breakbone DanceCo., Margi Cole of The Dance COLEctive, Amy Page of Melissa Thodos and Dancers, and at The Cornservatory. He has choreographed in Colorado, and for Elmhurst College. He is currently working with Breakbone, and Rachel Damon of Synapse Arts Collective. Jesse would like to thank his wife Wendy for her support.
